SUMMARY:2025-2026 Masterworks Concert Series Prelude to Spring Concert - Denver
DESCRIPTION:2025-2026 Season Masterworks Concert Series\nPrelude to Spring Concert\nEvergreen Performance\nJoin the Evergreen Chamber Orchestra and experience dramatic contrasts and heroic triumphs with a program that begins with the theatrical flair of the Parisian stage. Our Prelude to Spring Concert opens with Jacques Offenbach’s high-spirited Overture to “Orpheus in the Underworld“\, a witty and satirical romp featuring the now infamous “Can-Can.” \nFollowing this\, the Colorado Symphony’s Assistant Principal Bass Nicholas Recuber steps into the spotlight for the WORLD-PREMIERE performance of William Hill’s captivating Fantasy for Double Bass\, Electric Bass and Orchestra\, a rare and stunning showcase for an underutilized instrument for solo roles. \nThe evening concludes with Antonín Dvořák’s powerful and turbulent Symphony No. 7\, a work of profound struggle and defiant heroism that culminates in a glorious\, life-affirming finale. This work is widely regarded as one of the greatest works in the symphonic repertoire\, with musicologist Donald Tovey saying “along with the four Brahms symphonies and Schubert’s Ninth\, it is among the greatest and purest examples in this art-form since Beethoven”. \nPROGRAM:\nJACQUES OFFENBACH\n“Orphée aux enfers” (“Orpheus in the Underworld”) \nAct I\, Scene I – Ouverture \nWILLIAM HILL\nFantasy for Double Bass\, Electric Bass\, and Orchestra \nWorld Premiere! \nNicholas Recuber – Double Bass\, Electric Bass \nANTONÍN DVOŘÁK\nSymphony No. 7 in D Minor\, Op. 70\, B. 141 \nI – Allegro maestoso \nII – Poco adagio \nIII – Scherzo: Vivace – Poco meno mosso \nIV – Finale: Allegro \n  \nAll tickets to ECO Concerts and Events now include links to access the live-stream and video-on-demand replay of the concert! \nCan’t watch the concert at the time of the performance? SUMMARY:Virtual Ticket - 2024-2025 Masterworks Concert Series Prelude to Spring Concert - Denver
DESCRIPTION:2024-2025 Season Masterworks Concert Series\nPrelude to Spring Concert\nDenver Performance\nLIVE-STREAM ONLY\nECO’s Masterworks Concert Series continues with our Prelude to Spring Concert\, which features orchestral works by composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. \nSavor the mysticism of Brazil with Heitor Villa-Lobos’ Macumba (Evocation of the spirits) from his Suite No. 2 for Chamber Orchestra. Villa-Lobos is one of the best-known South American composers of all time\, and he is certainly one of the most significant Brazilian composers. Macumba is a generic term for various Afro-Brazilian religions comparable to “black magic” in English and Villa-Lobos masterfully translates the enigma of the supernatural into this captivating work. \nNext\, embark on a magical journey through Maurice Ravel’s enchanting Ma mère l’Oye (Mother Goose Suite)\, a whimsical masterpiece inspired by fairy tales. Ravel originally wrote Ma mère l’Oye as a piano duet for the Godebski children\, Mimi and Jean\, ages 6 and 7\, to whom he dedicated the work. SUMMARY:2024-2025 Masterworks Concert Series Prelude to Spring Concert - Denver
DESCRIPTION:2024-2025 Season Masterworks Concert Series\nPrelude to Spring Concert\nDenver Performance\nECO’s Masterworks Concert Series continues with our Prelude to Spring Concert\, which features orchestral works by composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Ravel’s enchanting score brings to life beloved characters like Tom Thumb and Beauty and the Beast with delicate orchestral colors and playful melodies. \nWe are thrilled to welcome back the extraordinary Yumi Hwang-Williams\, Concertmaster and Principal Violinist of the Colorado Symphony\, as our soloist for our Prelude to Spring Concert! \nECO’s Prelude to Spring Concerts will conclude with Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s beloved Violin Concerto in D Major\, Op. 35 with Ms. Hwang-Williams as soloist. SUMMARY:2023-2024 Masterworks Concert Series Season Opener - Denver - Virtual Ticket
DESCRIPTION:2023-2024 Masterworks Concert SeriesSEASON OPENER – DENVERLIVE-STREAM ONLY\nLooking for in-person tickets to this event? Click here!\nJoin us at 3pm on Sunday\, October 8th\, 2023 for the Season Opener of our celebrated Masterworks Concert Series! \nWe kick off our 2023-2024 Season with an eclectic selection of programming – from Scott Joplin to Haydn\, and even two local Colorado composers\, there’s something for everyone in this concert. \nScott Joplin\, known as the “King of Ragtime”\, composed more than forty ragtime pieces\, as well as a ragtime ballet and opera. Joplin took the rag – then known primarily as “lowly saloon music played by wandering honky-tonk pianists” – and elevated it to the level of classical art music meant for the concert hall. He essentially created the “classic rag”\, blending Afro-American syncopation with classical romantic form and melodies. ECO will perform two of his best-known works – the “Maple Leaf Rag” and “The Entertainer”. \nECO cellist James Todd has served as principal cellist with the Arapahoe Philharmonic in Denver\, Colorado\, and has performed with many area music ensembles including the Colorado Symphony\, Colorado Ballet\, Boulder Philharmonic\, Colorado Chamber Players. He has performed as a guest solo artist with the Arapahoe Philharmonic\, the Denver Symphony\, the MSU Symphony Orchestra\, the Aurora Symphony\, the Jefferson Symphony Orchestra and the Evergreen Chamber Orchestra. Mr. Todd has recently produced and released his widely acclaimed album of original music for cello and piano\, “Quiet Beauty”\, marking his foray in composing\, arranging and performing his own music. ECO is proud to be performing his composition “New Day” for our 2023-2024 Season Opener! \nColorado composer Cindi Hsu’s music is noted for its richness in color\, expressive melodic lines and open sincerity. Her music inspires to capture the essence of true human emotions and feelings\, expressing wit and a sparkling sense of humor\, as well as the capacity for expressions of deep pathos. Her “storytelling” composition style was instilled in her early childhood\, as she loved the spur of the moment bedtime stories that her father made up and told her each night. ECO will be performing her work “Once Upon a Time” for our 2023-2024 Season Opener – a continuation of our collaborations over the past several seasons! \nAntonio Vivaldi is one of the greatest Baroque-era composers alongside J.S. Bach and G.F. Handel. A virtuoso violinist and prolific composer\, Vivaldi practically brought the burgeoning concerto genre into mainstream use. Vivaldi’s best-known work is the “Four Seasons” – a set of violin concertos that are performed extremely frequently. Longtime ECO cellist Mike Marecak has arranged one of Vivaldi’s Concertos for Four Violins into a Concerto for Four Cellos – we hope you enjoy the fruits of his labor as much as we have! This performance will feature ECO’s unique all-principal cello section – Mike Marecak\, Shirley Marecak\, James Todd\, and Marilyn Hof. \nFranz Joseph Haydn is one of the three masters of the classical era alongside Mozart and Beethoven. Affectionately known as “Papa Haydn”\, his music is filled with humor\, practical jokes\, and creative uses of the classical sonata form. The “Drum Roll” Symphony No. 103\, H. 103\, was one of the later of the twelve “London Symphonies” Haydn composed between 1791 and 1795. Nicknamed for the long timpani roll that begins the symphony\, this is one of Haydn’s most popular and widely-performed works. \nPROGRAM\nSCOTT JOPLIN – Maple Leaf Rag \nJAMES TODD – New Dayarr. by William Morse for Cello and Orchestrafeaturing James Todd – Cello \nCINDI HSU – “Once Upon a Time” for Cello and Orchestrafeaturing James Todd – Cello \nANTONIO VIVALDI – Concerto for Four Cellos\, Op. 3\, No. 10featuring Mike Marecak\, Shirley Marecak\, Jim Todd\, Marilyn Hof – Cello \nSCOTT JOPLIN – The Entertainer \nFRANZ JOSEPH HAYDN – Symphony No. 103\, H. 1/103 – “Drum Roll” \n\nECO’s Live-Stream tickets are offered as “pay what you like”. There is no difference between the ticket prices – please feel free to pay what you think is fair! \n \nLooking for in-person tickets to this event? Click here!

The libretto is an allegory based on the mythical story of Prometheus\, who stole fire from Zeus to create mankind from clay. Overtures from ballets and operas typically become popular concert pieces for orchestral performances\, and the overture from this ballet is no exception. \nThe concert continues with Max Bruch’s famous Romanze for Viola and String Orchestra. Originally composed in 1911 for Maurice Vieux\, the principal violist at the Paris Opera and Conservatoire Orchestra\, this lovely eight-minute work features beautiful\, sweeping melodies characteristic of the late romantic style. \nNext\, the world-premiere performance of ECO Music Director William Hill’s new composition – his Concerto for Viola\, Strings\, and Percussion! Mr. Hill’s compositions are at once strikingly unique yet intimately familiar – we are very much looking forward to hearing this new piece\, even more so considering Basil Vendryes will be the soloist! \nOur 2022-2023 Season will conclude with a performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 in F Major\, Op. 68. Known as the “Pastorale” Symphony\, Op. 68 was composed in 1808 simultaneously with his universally popular Fifth Symphony. The Sixth Symphony is unique in Beethoven’s oeuvre in that it is one of the few pieces containing explicitly programmatic content. Each movement’s narrative is offered through its title and correlates with the music in an imaginative manner. Beethoven’s love for nature and the outdoors is greatly reflected in the expression of this piece. The symphony has five movements without any pauses between the final three movements. \nPROGRAM\nLudwig van Beethoven\nThe Creatures of Prometheus\, Op. 43\nI – Overture \nMax Bruch\nRomanze\, Op. 85\nBasil Vendryes – Viola \nWilliam Hill\nConcerto for Viola\, Strings\, and Percussion\nBasil Vendryes – Viola \nLudwig van Beethoven\nSymphony No. 6\, Op. 68 – “Pastorale”\nI – Allegro ma non troppo – “Erwachen heiterer Empfindungen bei der Ankunft auf dem Lande” \nII – Andante molto mosso – “Szene am Bach” \nIII – Allegro – “Lustiges Zusammensein der Landleute” \nIV – Allegro – “Gewitter\, Sturm” \nV – Allegretto – “Hirtengesang. Frohe und dankbare Gefühle nach dem Sturm”

SUMMARY:2022-2023 Masterworks Concert Series Spring Concert - Denver
DESCRIPTION:19th-Century Masterpieces\nThe second half of ECO’s 2022-2023 Masterworks Concert Series begins with our Spring Concert – featuring masterpieces of the 19th century by Claude Debussy\, Clara Schumann\, and Georges Bizet. The concert begins with Debussy’s Petite Suite\, L. 65 – this delightful piece was initially composed for piano four-hands\, and was later arranged by Debussy’s student Henri Busser for orchestra. \nThen – a real treat – Steinway Artist and DU professor Stephanie Cheng joins ECO to perform Clara Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A Minor\, Op. 7. Known then as Clara Wieck\, prior to her later marriage to Robert Schumann – Clara Wieck-Schumann was an extremely talented concert pianist and was widely known as one of the eminent virtuosos of her time. This concerto was composed beginning in 1833 – at age 13! – and completed in 1835. The premiere of the concerto was in November of that year with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and was conducted by Felix Mendelssohn. ECO is fortunate to have Stephanie Cheng join us to perform this incredible work. Dr. Cheng is the chair of the Keyboard Department at the University of Denver Lamont School of Music\, and has performed at numerous prestigious concert halls worldwide. \nThe second half of the program features Georges Bizet’s Symphony in C. Bizet is most famous for his opera Carmen – and this symphony was not even published or performed during Bizet’s lifetime. It was discovered in the archives of the Paris Conservatoire in 1933\, nearly sixty years after Bizet’s death. The work was finally premiered in Basel\, Switzerland in the same year by conductor Felix Weingartner\, and has been a perennial favorite ever since. \n\nPROGRAM\nClaude Debussy\nPetite Suite\, L. 65\nI – En bateau: Andantino \nII – Cortège: Moderato \nIII – Menuet: Moderato \nIV: Ballet: Allegro giusto \nClara (Wieck) Schumann\nPiano Concerto\, Op. 7\nStephanie Cheng – Piano \nI – Allegro maestoso \nII – Romanze: Andante non troppo con grazia \nIII – Finale: Allegro non troppo; Allegro molto \nGeorges Bizet\nSymphony in C Major\nI – Allegro vivo \nII – Andante; Adagio \nIII – Scherzo: Allegro vivace \nIV: Finale: Allegro Vivace \nPlease review ECO’s COVID-19 Policies for Live Events before purchasing.
