SUMMARY:Virtual Ticket - 2025-2026 Masterworks Concert Series Season Finale Concert – Evergreen
DESCRIPTION:Evergreen Performance\nLive-Stream Ticket Only!\nJoin us for an unforgettable Season Finale showcasing the grand and heroic genius of Ludwig van Beethoven. The concert opens with the triumphant Piano Concerto No. 5\, “Emperor\,” featuring the dazzling Colorado native but internationally acclaimed pianist and Steinway Artist Katie Mahan. Known for her poetic interpretations and brilliant technique\, Mahan brings a fresh perspective to this majestic work\, which is Beethoven’s final and most celebrated piano concerto. \nThe program concludes with the infectious energy of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7\, a work famously described by Richard Wagner as “the apotheosis of the dance” for its relentless and joyous rhythmic drive that builds to a thrilling and exuberant conclusion. The work was composed during 1811 and 1812 as Beethoven spent time in the spa town of Teplitz – hoping to improve his health. Beethoven’s hearing loss was markedly worsening\, but nonetheless the Symphony No. 7 is considered one of his crowning achievements. SUMMARY:Virtual Ticket - 2024-2025 Masterworks Concert Series Season Finale - Evergreen
DESCRIPTION:2024-2025 Season Masterworks Concert Series\nSeason Finale\nEvergreen Performance\nLIVE-STREAM ONLY\nECO’s 2024-2025 Masterworks Concert Series will come to a close with our Season Finale Concert\, featuring a unique duo of works for orchestra and chorus. We are delighted to continue our collaborative friendship with the Evergreen Chorale as we perform one of the greatest masterpieces of the past alongside a new and innovative work. \nWe invite you to experience the world premiere of a new composition for chorus and chamber orchestra by William Hill\, ECO’s Music Director and Colorado Symphony’s Principal Timpanist. ECO is proud to continue our longstanding tradition of premiering new works by talented contemporary composers. Performing under the baton of the composer is a rewarding and fulfilling experience! \nThis groundbreaking work promises to expand the boundaries of choral music. This season is no exception – and he has pulled out all the stops with his newest composition. His Rhapsody for Piano and Orchestra is a through-composed piano concerto that highlights all the hallmarks of his style. He has taken all of his favorite influences – from Stravinsky to modern Jazz – and blended them together in ways only he could accomplish. \nPianist Jamie Shaak will be joining ECO as soloist to perform the world premiere of this new work. Her concert hall appearances include the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. and Lincoln Center in New York City\, and she has toured East Asia and India as a Musical Ambassador with the United States Information Service. Shaak has released two albums: The Sun is Love with soprano Michelle Areyzaga\, performing original works by composer Gwyneth Walker’s “extravagantly scored accompaniments [that Shaak] dispatches with astonishing effortlessness” (NATS Journal); and The Romance of Spain (Cadenza Classics) with soprano Maria Lagios and guitarist Paul Henry. \nShaak has performed concertos with the Denver Symphony Orchestra\, the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra\, the National Repertory Orchestra\, the Centennial Orchestra\, The Waukegan Symphony\, The Mercury Ensemble\, the Arapahoe Philharmonic\, and the Jefferson Symphony. She received a Bachelor’s degree from The Eastman School of Music with Dr. Nelita True; and her Masters degree from Juilliard\, where she worked with John Browning as a Vladimir Horowitz scholar. \nLudwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3\, Op. 55 in Eb Major is one of the greatest classical masterworks of all-time. Nicknamed the “Eroica” (heroic) symphony\, this work is widely considered to mark the beginning of Beethoven’s so-called “Middle Period” of his compositional output\, as well as a landmark piece in the transition from the classical era to the romantic era. The “Middle Period” is marked by innovations and experimentations by Beethoven that pushed the boundaries of symphonic form\, harmony\, and – particularly with regards to this work – culturally-relevant content. \nThe “Eroica” symphony was completed in 1804 and premiered in April of 1805 in Vienna. Interestingly\, many music historians and theory buffs believe this work was composed “back to front” – meaning the forth movement was composed first – as the theme of the fourth movement originates from Beethoven’s 12 Contredanses for Orchestra\, WoO 14. In addition\, the same theme was used for his Variations and Fugue for Piano in Eb Major\, Op. 35\, which are now known as the “Eroica Variations” as the theme is so well-known from the symphony. \nBeethoven had originally dedicated this symphony to Napoleon Bonaparte\, believing he was a perfect embodiment of the democratic ideals that Beethoven held so dear. In fact\, the work originally had the subtitle “Bonaparte”! However\, after learning that Napoleon had crowned himself Emperor\, Beethoven retracted the dedication – a story that has become legendary in its telling by Beethoven’s secretary Ferdinand Ries: \nI was the first to tell him the news that Bonaparte had declared himself Emperor\, whereupon he broke into a rage and exclaimed\, “So he is no more than a common mortal! Now\, too\, he will tread under foot all the rights of Man\, indulge only his ambition; now he will think himself superior to all men\, become a tyrant!” Beethoven went to the table\, seized the top of the title-page\, tore it in half and threw it on the floor. \nThe published version of the score for the Symphony No. 3 includes the title: Sinfonia Eroica … composta per festeggiare il sovvenire di un grande Uomo (“Heroic Symphony\, Composed to celebrate the memory of a great man”). \nPROGRAM:\nWILLIAM HILL\nRhapsody for Piano and Orchestra\nFeaturing Jamie Shaak – Piano \nLUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN\nSymphony No. 3. Op. 55 in Eb Major – “Eroica”\nI – Allegro con brio \nII – Marcia funebre: Adagio assai \nIII – Scherzo: Allegro vivace \nIV – Finale: Allegro molto \n  \nECO’s Live-Stream tickets are offered as “pay what you like”. There is no difference between each of the price levels – please feel free to pay whatever you feel is appropriate! \nLooking for in-person tickets to this performance? Click here!

SUMMARY:2023-2024 Masterworks Concert Series Fall Concert - Evergreen - Virtual Ticket
DESCRIPTION:LIVE-STREAM ONLY \n2023-2024 Masterworks Concert Series\nFALL CONCERT\nECO’s 2023-2024 Season Masterworks Concert Series continues with our Fall Concert!  \nLooking for in-person tickets to this event? Click here! \nJoin us at 3pm on Saturday\, November 11th\, 2023 for a program featuring orchestral suites by Bach and Stravinsky – plus\, a very special performance of Felix Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E Minor featuring ECO Concertmaster Katherine Thayer! \nOriginally written as charming piano duets between Igor Stravinsky and his children\, Suites No. 1 and 2 for Small Orchestra are filled with jubilant melodies and witty musical satire. The Polka in Suite No. 2 evokes the image of the Russian music and art aficionado Serge Diaghilev. As Stravinsky recalled\, “It is a caricature of Diaghilev\, whom I had seen as a circus trainer cracking a long whip.” Other movements pay homage to Alfredo Casello\, who requested a dedication for himself\, and Erik Satie\, the French composer and personal friend of Stravinsky. These charming works were orchestrated in 1921 and 1925\, but date from Stravinsky’s “Swiss period”\, between 1914 and 1920. Stravinsky’s primary source of income – working with the Ballet Russes in Paris – had dried up due to the First World War\, but he maintained a high level of compositional productivity during this self-imposed exile. This will be the first time ECO has performed works by Stravinsky during ECO Music Director William Hill’s tenure. \nJohann Sebastian Bach is regarded as one of the greatest composers of all time\, and his Orchestral Suite No. 4 in D Major\, BWV 1069\, is some of the most joyful and delightful music ever written. Bach composed this Suite in the French style as was common for orchestral suites at the time. We know that Bach himself would use “laughter” and “joy” as the text association for this piece since he would go on to use the opening French overture as the first movement of his 1725 Christmas cantata “Unser Mund sei voll Lachens”\, BWV 110\, which when translated means\, “Our mouths are full of laughter”. If you would like to learn more about this exhilarating piece we invite you to view Netherlands Bach Society Conductor Lars Urik Mortenson’s video review. \nDuring the summer of 1838\, Felix Mendelssohn finally wrote to his longtime friend Ferdinand David\, who had repeatedly asked Felix to compose a violin concerto\, “I should like to write a violin concerto for you next winter. One in E minor runs through my head\, the beginning of which gives me no peace.” It would be seven more years before David premiered Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E Minor\, Op. 64\, in March of 1845 at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig\, Germany. This iconic masterpiece – one of the all-time greatest romantic violin concertos – will be performed by ECO’s very own concertmaster Katherine Thayer as the grand finale of our Fall Concerts. \nKatherine Thayer is a prominent violinist in Denver and serves as concertmaster of the Evergreen Chamber Orchestra and the Denver Philharmonic Orchestra. She has held positions in the first violin sections of the Kamarata Lysy\, the Wurttembergishes Kammer Orchertre and the Mozarteum Orchestra of Salzburg\, touring frequently throughout Europe and the Philippines. Ms. Thayer will be performing on the 1839 Joseph Ceruti Italian violin her friend and violin maker Robert Bigsby gifted her upon seeing her joy and love for the instrument the first time she played it. \nPROGRAM\nIGOR STRAVINSKY – Suites for Small Orchestra – No. 1 and No. 2 \nJOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH – Orchestral Suite No. 4 in D Major\, BWV 1069 \nFELIX MENDELSSOHN – Violin Concerto in E Minor\, Op. 64\nfeaturing ECO Concertmaster Katherine Thayer – Violin \n  \nECO’s live-stream tickets are offered as “pay what you like”. SUMMARY:2023-2024 Masterworks Concert Series Season Opener - Evergreen - Virtual Ticket
DESCRIPTION:2023-2024 Masterworks Concert Series\nSEASON OPENER – EVERGREEN\nLIVE-STREAM ONLY\nLooking for in-person tickets to this event? Click here!\nJoin us at 3pm on Saturday\, October 7th\, 2023 for the Evergreen performance of our celebrated Masterworks Concert Series Season Opener! \nWe kick off our 2023-2024 Season with an eclectic selection of programming – from Scott Joplin to Haydn\, and even two local Colorado composers\, there’s something for everyone in this concert. \nScott Joplin\, known as the “King of Ragtime”\, composed more than forty ragtime pieces\, as well as a ragtime ballet and opera. Joplin took the rag – then known primarily as “lowly saloon music played by wandering honky-tonk pianists” – and elevated it to the level of classical art music meant for the concert hall. He essentially created the “classic rag”\, blending Afro-American syncopation with classical romantic form and melodies. ECO will perform two of his best-known works – the “Maple Leaf Rag” and “The Entertainer”. \nECO cellist James Todd has served as principal cellist with the Arapahoe Philharmonic in Denver\, Colorado\, and has performed with many area music ensembles including the Colorado Symphony\, Colorado Ballet\, Boulder Philharmonic\, Colorado Chamber Players. He has performed as a guest solo artist with the Arapahoe Philharmonic\, the Denver Symphony\, the MSU Symphony Orchestra\, the Aurora Symphony\, the Jefferson Symphony Orchestra and the Evergreen Chamber Orchestra. Mr. Todd has recently produced and released his widely acclaimed album of original music for cello and piano\, “Quiet Beauty”\, marking his foray in composing\, arranging and performing his own music. ECO is proud to be performing his composition “New Day” for our 2023-2024 Season Opener! \nColorado composer Cindi Hsu’s music is noted for its richness in color\, expressive melodic lines and open sincerity. Her music aspires to capture the essence of true human emotions and feelings\, expressing wit and a sparkling sense of humor\, as well as the capacity for expressions of deep pathos. Her “storytelling” composition style was instilled in her early childhood\, as she loved the spur of the moment bedtime stories that her father made up and told her each night. ECO will be performing her work “Once Upon a Time” for our 2023-2024 Season Opener – a continuation of our collaborations over the past several seasons! \nAntonio Vivaldi is one of the greatest Baroque-era composers alongside J.S. Bach and G.F. Handel. A virtuoso violinist and prolific composer\, Vivaldi practically brought the burgeoning concerto genre into mainstream use. Vivaldi’s best-known work is the “Four Seasons” – a set of violin concertos that are performed extremely frequently. Longtime ECO cellist Mike Marecak has arranged one of Vivaldi’s Concertos for Four Violins into a Concerto for Four Cellos – we hope you enjoy the fruits of his labor as much as we have! This performance will feature ECO’s unique all-principal cello section – Mike Marecak\, Shirley Marecak\, James Todd\, and Marilyn Hof. \nFranz Joseph Haydn is one of the three masters of the classical era alongside Mozart and Beethoven. Affectionately known as “Papa Haydn”\, his music is filled with humor\, practical jokes\, and creative uses of the classical sonata form. The “Drum Roll” Symphony No. 103\, H. 103\, was one of the later of the twelve “London Symphonies” Haydn composed between 1791 and 1795. Nicknamed for the long timpani roll that begins the symphony\, this is one of Haydn’s most popular and widely-performed works. \nPROGRAM\n\nSCOTT JOPLIN – Maple Leaf Rag \nJAMES TODD – New Dayarr. by William Morse for Cello and Orchestrafeaturing James Todd – Cello \nCINDI HSU – “Once Upon a Time” for Cello and Orchestrafeaturing James Todd – Cello \nANTONIO VIVALDI – Concerto for Four Cellos\, Op. 3\, No. 10featuring Mike Marecak\, Shirley Marecak\, Jim Todd\, Marilyn Hof – Cello \nSCOTT JOPLIN – The Entertainer \nFRANZ JOSEPH HAYDN – Symphony No. 103\, H. 1/103 – “Drum Roll” \n\n\n  \nECO’s live-stream tickets are offered as “pay what you like”. There is no difference between the price levels – please feel free to pay what you think is fair! \n  \nLooking for in-person tickets to this event? Click here!

SUMMARY:2023-2024 Masterworks Concert Series Season Opener - Evergreen
DESCRIPTION:2023-2024 Masterworks Concert Series \nSEASON OPENER\nJoin us at 3pm on Saturday\, October 7th\, 2023 for the Evergreen performance of our celebrated Masterworks Concert Series Season Opener!\nWe kick off our 2023-2024 Season with an eclectic selection of programming – from Scott Joplin to Haydn\, and even two local Colorado composers\, there’s something for everyone in this concert. \nPROGRAM\nSCOTT JOPLIN – Maple Leaf Rag \nJAMES TODD – New Dayarr. by William Morse for Cello and Orchestrafeaturing James Todd – Cello \nCINDI HSU – “Once Upon a Time” for Cello and Orchestrafeaturing James Todd – Cello \nANTONIO VIVALDI – Concerto for Four Cellos\, Op. 3\, No. 10featuring Mike Marecak\, Shirley Marecak\, Jim Todd\, Marilyn Hof – Cello \nSCOTT JOPLIN – The Entertainer \nFRANZ JOSEPH HAYDN – Symphony No. 103\, H. 1/103 – “Drum Roll” \n\nLooking for live-stream only tickets for this event?
