Fostering the Next Generation of Composers

The Evergreen Chamber Orchestra is pleased to announce our first-ever Student Composition Competition! We are seeking applications from talented young composers living in Colorado that are currently in High School or working towards an Undergraduate degree.

The winning composition, which will be selected by our Music Director, William “Bill” Hill, will be performed by ECO at our 2021-2022 Season Spring Concert!

The top three winners will receive $500, $250, and $100 for first, second, and third prize, respectively.

Here are the official rules for the competition:

The total performance time of the piece should be between 6-8 minutes, and the work should be accessible for a high-level community chamber orchestra and audience.

The work should be scored for a standard chamber orchestra:

– 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 french horns, 2 trumpets, timpani, first violins, second violins, viola, cello, and double bass.

The composer may also use the following instruments in addition to the standard chamber orchestra instrumentation at their discretion:

– 4 french horns, 2 trombones, 2 percussionists, harp, or piano.

ECO encourages (but does not necessarily require) the use of latin or African-inspired rhythms

Applicants MUST provide the score in a .pdf format. The score can be hand-written or exported from a professional music notation software (Finale, Sibelius, Logic Pro, etc…).

Applicants MUST complete the form below AND pay the $20 Application Fee prior to December 1st, 2021.

Winners will be announced via our website, social media, and email by January 10th, 2022.

The winning composer must have the score and parts for their composition ready for ECO to play by February 10th, 2022.

We look forward to your submissions!
