Join us for a program of thought-provoking music that spans the human experience from heartfelt introspection to unbridled joy. The concert begins with the achingly beautiful Adagietto from Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 5, a lyrical and intimate movement that is often considered a wordless love letter.
Next, longtime ECO pianist Peggy Lyon returns to perform J.S. Bach’s Keyboard Concerto No. 3, BWV 1054 in D Major. Modeled after the famous E-Major Violin Concerto BWV 1042 but transposed to D Major to reach the highest key on the harpsichords of the day, Bach’s third keyboard concerto uses da capo ABA form in the first movement – a rare occurrence in Bach’s oeuvre.
The program concludes with Johannes Brahms’ magnificent Symphony No. 2, a work of rich orchestration that moves from pastoral serenity to a triumphant and exhilarating finale.
